SUMMARY:Is Artificial Intelligence Prone To Prejudice?
DESCRIPTION:Research conducted by Dr Joanna Bryson in collaboration with Aylin Caliskan and Arvind Narayanan from Princeton University has shown that applying machine learning to text taken from the Internet results in AI with human-like semantic biases. \nThese biases can be morally neutral as toward insects or flowers\, problematic as toward race or gender\, or even simply veridical\, reflecting the status quo distribution of gender with respect to careers or first names. \nTheir finding indicates that standard written and spoken words contain recoverable and accurate imprints of our historical biases. It also holds the promise for identifying and addressing sources of bias in our culture and technology. \nIn her talk\, Dr Bryson will present her research on machine bias\, and discuss what this reveals about the origins of human biases\, stereotypes\, and prejudices. Joanna will also explore how implicit and explicit human bias accounts for bias in AI\, and discuss when and how we may be able to use AI to address prejudice.

SUMMARY:Bristol Distinguished Address
DESCRIPTION:Aligning Interests: Lessons from the world of Private Equity\nTim Parker (@PostOffice)\, Chairman of the Post Office\, will deliver a lecture as part of the Bristol Distinguished Address Series entitled ‘Aligning Interests: Lessons from the world of Private Equity.’\nOne of the advantages of the private equity model of ownership is that management team of an investment are offered a stake in the business. This leads a direct alignment of interest between investors and managers. The private equity model has proved extremely successful for investors and my intention is to explore it in more depth\, and to look at examples of other organizations in the public and private sectors that might benefit from better alignment of interest between managers\, funders and consumers.

SUMMARY:Accountable and Explainable AI
DESCRIPTION:Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning systems have recently been shown to be susceptible to biased and discriminatory decision-making. Detecting and fixing these problems is difficult due to the inherent opacity of these systems. In response\, calls to make algorithmic decision-making systems more transparent\, explainable\, and therefore accountable can be seen in academic literature\, policy proposals and laws\, such as the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation. At the same time\, explaining the functionality of complex algorithmic decision-making systems and their rationale in specific cases is a technically challenging problem. Some explanations may offer little meaningful information to individuals\, raising questions around their value. Further\, companies and governments have an interest to not disclose information about their algorithms that contain trade secrets\, violates the rights and freedoms of others (e.g. privacy)\, or allows individuals to game or manipulate decision-making.\nThis talk explains why accountability in AI-based systems is an ethical responsibility\, explores the legal requirements in the General Data Protection Regulation applicable to AI and examines if ‘counterfactual explanations’ can bridge the gap between transparency and competing interests.

SUMMARY:Bristol Distinguished Address
DESCRIPTION:Enabling human progress in a digital world\nInga Beale DBE (@IngaBeale)\, CEO of Lloyds of London will deliver a lecture as part of the Bristol Distinguished Address Series entitled ‘Enabling human progress in a digital world.’\nThe world faces a silent threat so complex and interconnected it has become impossible for any single government\, sector or think tank to solve. It could strike a blow to the global economy equivalent to some of the biggest and costliest natural catastrophes in history. And it lurks beneath the incredible benefits that the digital revolution has brought.\nIt is the multi-layered threat. A cyber-attack. But does society understand the true scale of the threat.\nNew and emerging technologies like AI\, smartphones\, driverless cars\, drones\, smart devices and the internet of things promise all sorts of advantages. For all the good they promise they also carry unquantified and underexplored risks.\nAs society becomes increasingly dependent on digital technologies\, Inga Beale will explore this evolving megathreat\, its implications and how people\, businesses and governments can protect themselves from financial and reputational ruin.
