As part of their speaker search for 2019, TEDxBristol came to Future Space last week to hold a day of workshops and 1to1s with aspiring speakers. This was a fantastic opportunity for the many people who have great ideas and stories to tell, but just need a little help to take them forwards. For team TEDx, with hundreds of applications rolling in, the event gave the team the chance to meet applicants face to face and hear stories unfiltered by an application form.
The TED brand had certainly been noticed, as a queue had started forming in Future Space reception by 10am while the TEDx team were still setting up their trademark red furnishings!
Over the course of the day there were a really diverse range of people dropping in – from faces familiar to most in the local business ecosystem, to UWE undergraduates fitting a visit in between exams. All had a story to tell and were keen to stake their claim for a place in the line-up while hearing from Mel Rodriguez on what the REFLECT:RETHINK:REBOOT theme is all about:
“It could be something small or something huge. It’ll have a ripple effect. Look at the bonkers & the broken. What are we going to reboot?”
Also in-house for the day were experts from communication specialists Hodos Consultancy Co, associate partners of TEDxBristol. The “Narrative Consultants” are sharing their experience of using story telling techniques to help the aspiring speakers and it was great to hear some of their wisdom:
“Self doubt is normal. Imposter syndrome is something we all get. Authenticity comes from personal experience. Being YOU!”
The application process is still open for speakers, but with hundreds of applications already in, you better get applying quickly! Overall it was fantastic to have the TEDx team in Future Space for the day and if we took one thing away…it’s that the main event in November is going to be a cracker!
