It is generally appreciated these days, that good design can make the difference between a great product (or service) and an worthy failure. It is a key discipline and often something that engineers and scientists don’t have deep training in (and why should they). This workshop aims to point out some of the common pitfalls and misconceptions to help early stage businesses decide what they need, when they need it and how to manage external agencies if they don’t have the internal skills.

Huw Robson is a visiting professor at UWE, and for many years was a global Research Director with HP Labs, based in the very building where Futurespace now sits. An engineer by training, prior to this he had worked in start-ups, other corporates and as a consultant. After taking early-retirement he spent some years delivering a Design Council programme to mentor SMEs across the South West in design thinking. Recently he is spearheading a new venture, The Product Partnership, to engage SMEs with a cluster of leading product design agencies in Bristol
