Future Space members Reygar were launched in 2012 and developed their award-winning technology with support from Innovate UK.
BareFLEET is a remote monitoring system that gathers data from on board boats – such as motion and fuel consumption – to give customers an insight into how efficiently their vessels are operating and if they are performing as they should.
Founder Chris Huxley-Reynard and his team moved into Future Space in early 2020, when their technology was attracting new clients, such as Siemens, and the company was beginning to grow.
While covid has meant life has not been plain sailing for the marine innovators, they have since gone on to create their new V-Pilot technology, which allows their customers to control unmanned vessels carrying out survey work on the seabed.
Now a team of nine people, they took on their first intern this year as part of the Future Space internship programme supported by the University of the West of England. Chris was aware that the Reygar team of engineers and “techies” were lacking the capacity for design and marketing, so he recruited intern Ashlea Philips, who is in her final year studying Animation at UWE Bristol.
Since joining the team at the end of May 2022, Ashlea has already used her skills to completely refresh the Reygar website, create a series of brochures for trade shows, and created a product video for their homepage.
Chris says:
“I’d never taken on an intern before so it was really useful to get the support of the Future Space team to decide what skills we needed and how to work with the intern. Good planning has meant we’re able to work in a structured way with Ashlea and provide clear objectives, allowing Ashlea to do most of her work remotely.
“Without the funding for this position this is the kind of work we would keep putting off. We knew it needed doing but now we have saved quite a bit of expenditure that we can put towards growing our business in other areas. The applicants were really high calibre and we’ve been very happy with the work Ashlea has produced. We’re hoping to keep her on for future work, and Ashlea is keen to work with other businesses at Future Space too. We’d definitely recommend her.”
Ashlea says:
“Working at Reygar has been a fantastic opportunity to expand the skills I’ve learned while on my course at UWE Bristol. It’s been great to see how a lot of the techniques for idea generation and design that I would normally apply to animation are still applicable and very useful in graphic design.
“I’ve loved how much creative freedom I’ve been given. It’s been great to spend more time learning about video editing – we’ve been working on some video content for a trade show and for Reygar’s website.
“I’d definitely recommend these internships, especially for creative students. It can be hard for companies that aren’t in a creative industry to know where to find good designers, and it can be hard for arts students to know which companies are looking to hire. This scheme is a great way for both sides to bridge the gap.”
